KOSTBARER ALS GOLD
Die Arbeit KOSTBARER ALS GOLD ist Teil des von Maria Reitter-Kollmann kuratierten Projektes EIN STÜCK VOM HIMMEL und wird ab dem 18. Mai 2025 im MARIENDOM LINZ.
Unter Bezugnahme auf die historische Konnotation von Lapislazuli als Himmelsfarbe in der Kunstgeschichte, integriert die Arbeit über 265 individuell aufgestickte Lapislazuli Steine in eine fragmentarische Repräsentation des Firmaments.
Die Lapislazuli-Steine symbolisieren die Kostbarkeit des Himmels und verweisen auf die historische Verwendung dieses Edelsteins zur Herstellung von Farbpigmenten, die insbesondere in der kirchlichen Kunst und in der Darstellung von Himmeln Verwendung fanden. Lapislazuli, ein tiefblauer Halbedelstein, war über Jahrhunderte hinweg die Quelle für das Pigment der Farbe Ultramarinblau. Die Herstellung dieses Pigments war ein aufwendiger und kostspieliger Prozess, den Cennino Cennini, ein italienischer Maler des 15. Jahrhunderts, in seinem Werk Liber de Coloribus detailliert beschrieben hat. Die Seltenheit von hochwertigem Lapislazuli und der große Aufwand, der zur Pigmentherstellung nötig war, machte Ultramarinblau zu einem der wertvollsten Pigmente der Kunstgeschichte – oft sogar kostbarer als Gold.
Ultramarinblau wurde daher nur für die wichtigsten Werke und für die wertvollsten Teile von Gemälden verwendet wie zum Beispiel für die Darstellung des Himmels in religiösen Gemälden, um die göttliche Sphäre und das Paradies zu repräsentieren. Die Verwendung von aufgestickten Lapislazuli-Steinen in der vorliegenden Arbeit ist eine Hommage an die historische Bedeutung dieses kostbaren Pigments. Die Steine dienen aber nicht nur als materielle Referenz auf das historische Pigment, sondern auch als Symbol für die immaterielle Kostbarkeit des Himmels selbst. So wie Ultramarinblau in der Kunstgeschichte kostbarer als Gold war, so ist auch der spirituelle Himmel für Gläubige kostbarer als alles Materielle. Er ist ein Ort der Hoffnung, der nicht mit Gold aufzuwiegen ist.
The work MORE PRECIOUS THAN GOLD is part of the project A PIECE OF HEAVEN, curated by Maria Reitter-Kollmann, and will be exhibited at the MARIENDOM LINZ starting May 18, 2025.
Referencing the historical connotation of lapis lazuli as the color of the sky in art history, the work integrates over 265 individually embroidered lapis lazuli stones into a fragmentary representation of the firmament. The lapis lazuli stones symbolize the preciousness of the heavens and allude to the historical use of this gemstone in the production of color pigments, particularly employed in ecclesiastical art and the depiction of celestial realms. Lapis lazuli, a deep blue semi-precious stone, served for centuries as the source for the pigment ultramarine blue. The creation of this pigment was a laborious and costly process, detailed by Cennino Cennini, a 15th-century Italian painter, in his work Il Libro dell'Arte. The rarity of high-quality lapis lazuli and the extensive effort required for pigment production rendered ultramarine blue one of the most valuable pigments in art history – often even more precious than gold.
Consequently, ultramarine blue was reserved for the most significant artworks and the most valued sections of paintings, such as the depiction of the sky in religious paintings, to represent the divine sphere and paradise. The use of embroidered lapis lazuli stones in the present work is a homage to the historical significance of this precious pigment. However, the stones serve not only as a material reference to the historical pigment but also as a symbol for the immaterial preciousness of the sky itself. Just as ultramarine blue was historically more valuable than gold in art, so too is the spiritual heaven more precious than any material wealth for believers. It is a place of hope, immeasurable by gold.
